Students at OSU-Cascades Commencement

Ceremony Instructions

Please read prior to your arrival on June 17

Check-In
Check-in is 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Les Schwab Amphitheater. Have your regalia on or with you. Look for the check-in area at the back of the amphitheater near the footbridge to the Old Mill. When you check-in, you will be given an index card with your line location/seat. Hold on to this card - it is important that you use it to make sure you are lined up in the right order. Graduates are seated by college/major. Once you’ve checked-in you are free to meet friends and family, take pictures, etc. Please be fully dressed in your regalia and in line by 11:30 a.m. The ceremony begins at 12 p.m. Faculty readers will start checking the line order at 11:35 a.m.

Important Note: There is no secure place to leave personal items at the check in area. You will need to either carry items with you to the ceremony or give them to family before we line up.

Pronunciation and Name Announcement
If your name is challenging, ask us to direct you to the reader for your College when you check in so you can make sure your name is announced correctly. If you wish to be announced by a different name, that is fine. Let your faculty reader know. However, do stay in the seating order on your card because that is where your diploma expects you to be!

Tassels
Tassels go on your right side. You will flip them to the left as a group during the ceremony after the awarding of the degrees.

Masters Hoods
Students earning master’s degrees will wear their hoods in the procession. Check with your advisor or program leader in the check-in area for assistance in getting your hood adjusted correctly.

Honor Cords (undergraduates only)
If you are eligible for honors, your honor cord will be given to you when you check in. It is worn around your neck. If you have any questions about your honors designation, please call Enrollment Services during regular business hours. Please note that honors were calculated through winter term grades and will be recalculated when final degree clearance is completed for posting on your official transcripts. Students who are participating in commencement who have filed for summer 2018 or fall 2018 graduation are not eligible for honors at commencement this year.

Line–up and Processional
You will see placards for the programs. Use your check-in card to find your place in line at 11:30 a.m. Family and friends should leave the area at this time and make their way to the amphitheater. Starting at 11:35 a.m., the faculty designate for your program will read the line lists to make sure everyone is in order. Because of OSU’s tradition of awarding diplomas at commencement, it is very important that you are in correct order.

At 12 p.m. sharp, the honor guard will lead the two lines of dignitaries, faculty, and then graduates towards the amphiteater. On the way, the dignitaries will stop on either side of the sidewalk and allow the faculty to proceed onward. Once the faculty passes the dignitaries, the faculty will stop on either side of the sidewalk and allow the graduates to proceed between the dignitaries and faculty to the seating area. Ushers will be on hand to guide you into your seat - keep your check-in card handy for assistance. The dignitaries will then proceed to the stage following the graduates and faculty will proceed to their seats following the dignitaries.

Conferring of Degrees and Awarding of Diplomas
Diplomas will be awarded to graduate students first and then undergraduates.

All candidates for Masters degrees will be asked to stand. Dr. Johnson will confer the degrees. Please remain standing and ushers will escort you from the seating area to the right hand side of the stage to form a line to the right of the seating area. Please watch for usher instructions and do not block the front of the stage.

When signaled to do so by an usher, walk across the stage to Dr. Becky Johnson (standing in front of the table of diplomas). Dr. Johnson will present your diploma case and shake hands. You will then continue across the stage and be presented with a rose. Then exit the stage by the steps or ramp at the far left of the stage.  Ushers will be on hand to guide you. There will be a GradImages photographer at the bottom of the stairs to take your picture. Please return to your seat after your picture.

When all the Master's diplomas have been distributed, the undergraduates will be asked to stand. Dr. Johnson will confer the degrees. The awarding of the diplomas will be done in two groups. Dr. Johnson will ask the undergraduates to her right to be seated. Undergraduates to her left will then be escorted by the ushers from the seating area to the right hand side of the stage to form a line to the right of the seating area. Please watch for usher instructions and do not block the front of the stage.

Recessional
At the end of the ceremony, the dignitaries will leave the stage, followed by the faculty.  The graduates will follow the faculty starting with the front row. Ushers will signal you at the appropriate time.  Please keep moving out of the seating area so students behind you are able to exit.
