Maribel Jimenez has always dreamed of becoming a teacher. After earning her bachelor’s degree in El Salvador, she moved to Madras and took a position in a preschool. She heard about the graduate teaching program at OSU-Cascades and decided to apply. She was accepted to the program and graduates this year with her master’s degree in teaching.
The graduate teaching program is an intense, year-long program, and with English being Maribel’s second language, it was even more challenging. “All of the instructors were 100% supportive,” she said.
For her student teaching experience, Maribel worked with a veteran teacher at Barnes Butte Elementary school in Prineville. She was placed in a dual immersion, third grade classroom where she taught in both Spanish and English.
Many of Maribel’s students are English Language Learners and can be overwhelmed when they first come to school. “I love helping students because I know exactly how they feel,” said Maribel.
Maribel’s dream of becoming a teacher is no longer a dream – she’s been hired to teach at Barnes Butte Elementary starting this fall.
