In 2013, the graduate counseling program at OSU-Cascades opened a state-of-the-art counseling clinic offering free mental health services to the Central Oregon community. The clinic serves as a practicum site for graduate students, where they provide individual counseling under the close supervision of faculty and clinical supervisors. Students each serve a small, but important clientele and gain critical experience as they embark on careers in the counseling field.
Within the clinic, one-way mirrors and earpiece technology allow for live supervision and coaching from faculty to students during a counseling session. Students receive real-time feedback and can immediately incorporate a faculty member’s guidance.
The clinic benefits the larger community, too. During a tough economy, it has been a valuable resource for community members who do not have mental health insurance coverage. And its clientele continues to grow. To date, the clinic has served nearly 300 community members experiencing depression, anxiety, veterans’ issues, trauma and other life challenges, and coordinators are planning expanded hours.
