More than 50 veterans pursuing degrees at OSU-Cascades

More than 50 students who receive veteran education benefits at Oregon State University - Cascades this fall served in the military.  

Among them are students pursuing degrees in accountancy, energy systems engineering, natural resources and tourism and outdoor leadership, who each are featured in online stories.

In total, 61 students at OSU-Cascades access veteran tuition benefits, including 9 who are accessing dependent benefits.

Of the students who are accessing veteran education benefits this fall:

•    17 are women
•    The oldest is 56; the youngest is 18
•    44 represent Central Oregon, five are from elsewhere in Oregon, 12 are from outside the state
•    Of those residing in Central Oregon, 24 are from Bend, eight are from Redmond, four are from Madras, three are from Terrebonne, two each are from La Pine and Prineville and one is from Powell Butte

In recent years, OSU-Cascades has developed services and resources for student veterans and veterans in the community.  The career services office at the branch campus provides resources for student veterans to assist with the transition from military to college life, and to a civilian career.

Through the graduate counseling program’s clinic, free counseling is offered to community members, including veterans.  Sessions provided by the clinic are facilitated by graduate students under the guidance of faculty and clinical supervisors.  Amy Ford leads the graduate program’s clinical mental health program and specializes in veteran populations. She oversees the clinic’s veteran’s outreach program.

On Veteran’s Day, members of the veterans community at OSU-Cascades will join a live taping of a Think Out Loud discussion in Bend hosted by Oregon Public Broadcasting and Oregon State University.
