Exhibit, talk explore life of Letitia Carson, one of the first Black female settlers in Oregon

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a lecture on Jan. 29 in honor of Black History Month about the life and legacy of Letitia Carson, one of the first Black woman settlers in Oregon.

The lecture, by Zachary Stocks, a public historian and executive director of the Oregon Black Pioneers, will take place from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus. 

An accompanying exhibit about Carson will be on view Jan. 29 – Feb. 5.

Kristen Millares Young

Kristen Millares Young is a journalist, essayist and author of the novel "Subduction," named a staff pick by The Paris Review and called “whip-smart” by the Washington Post, “a brilliant debut” by the Seattle Times and “utterly unique and important” by Ms. Magazine. Winner of Nautilus and IPPY awards, "Subduction" was shortlisted for the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award and named a finalist for two International Latino Book Awards and Foreword Indies Book of the Year.

Lacey Smyth

Since July 2017, Lacey has dedicated her career to supporting students at Oregon State University. She initially served as an academic advisor for the College of Pharmacy before transitioning to a learning specialist role in Academics for Student Athletes from 2018 to 2024. Lacey is deeply passionate about helping students find their paths and being a vital resource in their journeys at OSU. When she's not meeting with students, Lacey enjoys exploring the outdoors. Whether running, hiking, or snowshoeing, you'll find her on many of the beautiful trails in Central Oregon!

SnoPlanks, OSU-Cascades’ student-led snowboard company, brings first products to market

A snowboard company donated a year ago to Oregon State University – Cascades by its founders has brought its first boards to market under its new student leadership.

SnoPlanks’ 2025 line of snowboards, the “Asym Twin” and “Asym Fish,” debuted at the Snowvana winter sports show in Portland in November, where students hosted a booth. The new designs incorporate students’ analysis of the existing design, as well as market research, and feature the asymmetrical design that SnoPlanks is known for.

Rescheduled: OSU satellite data expert to speak at Science Pub on monitoring war zones on Jan. 21

The use of open satellite data to track the physical, environmental and humanitarian impacts in war-torn zones around the globe will be the topic of Oregon State University – Cascades Science Pub titled “Mapping War via Satellite” on Jan. 21.

This Science Pub was originally scheduled in Nov., but canceled due to a winter storm affecting the speaker’s travel.

The Science Pub on Jan. 21 focuses on how satellite data is used to understand physical and humanitarian impacts in war torn areas around the world.
