OSU-Cascades computer scientist receives $628,000 award to increase Oregon K-12 student participation in computer science

An Oregon State University - Cascades professor has been assigned a $628,000 award from the Oregon Department of Education to expand universally engaging, culturally appropriate and inclusive computer science education for K-12 students. 

An award received by Jill Hubbard, a computer scientist and professor of practice, will help expand an inclusive computer science education for Oregon K-12 students.

Reading and discussion with authors of book about people living with physical disability, Paralympic medalist

The authors of a book of essays about people living with physical disability will be joined by a Paralympic medalist for a reading and discussion at Oregon State University - Cascades on Jan. 23.  

Lily Collison and Kara Buckley, the authors of “Pure Grit,” will be joined by Kelly Crowley, a medalist in both swimming and cycling at the Paralympic Games, an international competition for athletes with a range of disabilities. She is an advocate for disability-inclusion.

Bend entrepreneurs will gift snowboard company, SnoPlanks to OSU-Cascades

The founders of a Bend-based snowboard company will donate it to Oregon State University – Cascades to provide students a hands-on opportunity running an outdoor products company.

OSU-Cascades officials are planning an innovative model, called SnoPlanks Academy, to operate the company. It incorporates leadership and management of SnoPlanks, a snowboard brand and production company, into students’ academic experiences. The company was founded by entrepreneurs James Nicol and Ryan Holmes.

Scholarship will honor OSU-Cascades student killed in mountaineering accident

The family of an Oregon State University - Cascades student killed in a mountaineering accident in July has committed more than $55,000 to create an endowed scholarship for students in financial need at OSU-Cascades.

The Joel Tranby Memorial Scholarship honors the life of Joel Tranby, a student at OSU-Cascades who died in an accident on North Sister in the Cascade Range just outside Bend.

A gift from the family of Joel Tranby has created a scholarship fund for students at OSU-Cascades who demonstrate financial need.

OSU-Cascades Science Pub explores how the biology of wild wolves may improve the health of dogs

Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub series continues on Dec. 12 with a talk that explores research by a team of biologists at the Bend campus on whether bacteria from wolves can improve the health of dogs.

The team, led by molecular biologist Bruce Seal, also includes undergraduate students pursuing degrees in biology. Together they discovered that bacteria from a wild wolf can potentially help prevent canine inflammatory bowel disease, a chronic and untreatable illness that affects the quality of dogs' lives and can be concerning for their owners.

OSU-Cascades fall enrollment shows 10.3% increase in first-year students, 3.3% overall

First-year student enrollment at Oregon State University – Cascades has increased for the ninth consecutive year, with a 2023 fall class of 225 students representing the largest in OSU-Cascades’ history and a 10.3% increase over the previous year.

The total number of students enrolled at OSU-Cascades this fall increased 3.3% over the previous year. The Bend campus now enrolls 1,313 students, including 1,058 undergraduates and 255 graduate students.

The 2023 class of 225 first-year students is 10.3% larger than last year.

Artist talk and film screening at OSU-Cascades to focus on communities facing displacement due to climate change

Oregon State University – Cascades is hosting an artist talk and film screening Nov. 12 featuring Indigenous artists from Louisiana and Alaska talking about communities in the two states facing displacement due to climate change.

The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend. The event is free, but registration is requested.
