OSU-Cascades, Scalehouse present artist talk, “No One Wants to be Boxed In”

Oregon State University - Cascades and Scalehouse, a Bend-based arts collaborative, will host local artist June Park for a talk about their journey of discovery as a creative and as a Central Oregon arts leader.

The talk, “No One Wants to be Boxed In, An Artist’s Journey,” is part of the “Scalehouse Voices” series and will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus.

The event is open to the public and registration is required. Registrants can attend for free or pay on a sliding scale.

OSU-Cascades to host live viewing of MLK keynote address by writer Jelani Cobb on Feb. 1

Oregon State University - Cascades will host a live viewing of OSU’s 41st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration keynote speaker, noted writer and higher education leader Jelani Cobb on Feb. 1.

The viewing will be broadcast from OSU’s campus in Corvallis and will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Tykeson Hall, Room 111 on the OSU-Cascades campus.

The event is free, but registration is required. Coffee, tea and light desserts will be available to attendees.

Cobb is a staff writer at The New Yorker who writes on race, history, justice, politics and democracy and dean of the Columbia University Journalism School.

Narcissists in the workplace topic of OSU-Cascades Science Pub on Jan. 17

Oregon State University - Cascades’ Science Pub on Jan. 17 will focus on narcissists and how they tend to rise within organizations, yet are ill-suited for decision-making positions.

“Why Narcissists are Never Wrong,” will be presented by Satoris Howes, a professor of management at OSU-Cascades and a Toomey Faculty Fellow in the OSU College of Business.

The Science Pub will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Worthy Brewing’s Eastside Brewery & Pub at 495 NE Bellevue Drive in Bend.

OSU Center for the Outdoor Recreation Economy launches leadership series for industry professionals

The Oregon State University Center for the Outdoor Recreation Economy will host the “Be Bold Conversation Series,” a six-week slate of workshops on leadership development for outdoor industry professionals at all career levels.

The free virtual series will be held via Zoom at noon on Feb. 8, Feb. 22, March 8, March 22, April 5 and April 19.

OSU-Cascades launches undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology

Oregon State University - Cascades has launched a new Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in response to industry need and student feedback.

The new degree, which will be available to students starting in fall 2023, will help OSU-Cascades develop a pipeline of graduates for positions in the health care and biotech sectors in Central Oregon, as well as around the state and nation. These sectors are growing rapidly with available positions outpacing the number of graduates in the field in Oregon, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Gift from Visit McMinnville expands impact of OSU-Cascades’ Sustainable Tourism Lab

 A $60,000 gift from Visit McMinnville, will enable the Sustainable Tourism Lab at Oregon State University – Cascades to help support the tourism bureau’s goals to serve visitor needs and advance community quality of life.

OSU-Cascades, Scalehouse present talk by Portland-based artist

Oregon State University - Cascades and Scalehouse, a Bend-based arts collaborative, will host artist and independent curator Jessica Nickel who will talk about a series of art exhibits she curated in Portland and her experience as an artist.

The talk “Finding Space, Curating the Inbetween,” is part of the “Scalehouse Voices” series and will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 29. in the atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall. The event is open to the public. Registrants can attend for free or pay on a sliding scale

Saoirse Jones joins OSU-Cascades as director of development

Oregon State University - Cascades announced that Saoirse Jones has joined its campus leadership team as director of development.

“We are thrilled to welcome Saoirse to OSU-Cascades and continue the groundswell of community philanthropy that made the OSU-Cascades campus and its expansion possible, and that has helped countless students through scholarships as they pursued their degrees,” said Andrew Ketsdever, interim vice president of OSU-Cascades.

Saoirse Jones joined OSU-Cascades as development director in September 2022.
