Dam Proud Day raises over $42,000 in scholarships for OSU-Cascades students

Supporters of Oregon State University - Cascades came together April 27, 2022 to raise more than $42,000 for student scholarships during Dam Proud Day, the university’s annual day of giving and engagement.

More than 130 community members, alumni of OSU and OSU-Cascades, parents, faculty and staff contributed.

Dam Proud Day featured donor challenges, encouraging participation, including a social media challenge.

OSU-Cascades Summer Academy for high school students open for registration

Registration is open for the Summer Academy at Oregon State University – Cascades, an annual program for high school students that includes classes, outdoor recreation experiences in Central Oregon and an introduction to campus life.

The Summer Academy is a five-day, in-person program led by OSU-Cascades faculty and other experts. It will be offered July 31 to Aug. 5 and Aug. 14-19. The program is for incoming and current high school students. Both day and overnight options are available.

Nurturing resilience in children and their families topic of Oregon State Science Pub on April 11

Oregon State University’s Science Pub on April 11 will focus on how early educators can nurture resilience through daily interactions with children and their families and how community members can further aid those efforts.

The virtual event, a joint effort of Oregon State University in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend, will feature Shannon Lipscomb, associate professor of human development and family sciences at OSU-Cascades, and Barbara Brody, associate professor of practice with OSU Extension Service in Malheur County.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board to meet April 11

The Oregon State University - Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will hear reports on enrollment and academics, and a presentation on the creative writing graduate program at its April 11 meeting.

The meeting will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Obsidian Hall, Room 207 on the OSU-Cascades campus.  The meeting is open to the public.

Interim Vice President Andrew Ketsdever will report on academic and enrollment updates, as well as on plans for the innovation district to be developed on the OSU-Cascades campus.

OSU Interim President Becky Johnson to deliver OSU-Cascades’ commencement address

Becky Johnson, interim president of Oregon State University, will give the commencement address at OSU-Cascades’ graduation ceremony on June 12.

Johnson served as vice president of OSU-Cascades from 2009 until 2021, when she was appointed the first woman to lead OSU.

World-renowned climate scientist to speak in Bend about urgent need to prevent worst impacts of climate change

Michael E. Mann, considered one of the world’s most influential climate scientists, will speak in Bend on March 31 about the urgent need to reverse decades of climate inaction and prevent the worst impacts of a climate crisis.

“The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back our Planet,” hosted by Oregon State University – Cascades and Skeptoid Media, Inc., will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Riverhouse on the Deschutes. 

An atmospheric scientist, Michael Mann introduced the iconic “hockey stick” graph, which has become a symbol of humanity's contribution to global warming.

Wildfire smoke’s impact on wine topic of next Oregon State Science Pub talk

The impact of wildfire smoke on wine and grapes will be the topic of Oregon State University’s Science Pub on Feb. 14.

The virtual event, a joint effort of Oregon State University in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend, will feature Cole Cerrato, a postdoctoral scholar at Oregon State. His presentation is titled: “Clearing the haze around wildfire smoke’s impact on wine: the chemistry of smoke-affected wine.”

At the upcoming Science Pub, OSU researchers will explore which chemicals in smoke impact wine most and how they mitigate flavors in smoked-affected wine.

OSU-Cascades to launch degrees in economics, political science

Oregon State University – Cascades will offer new bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science beginning fall 2022. The degree programs were approved by the OSU Board of Trustees on Friday.

“The new degree programs in economics and political science will attract students seeking careers in business and finance, public policy and government, and law and help them develop the critical skills needed to address some of society’s biggest challenges” said Interim Vice President Andrew Ketsdever.

OSU-Cascades anticipates adding degrees in economics and political science in fall 2022.

Business, real estate representatives invited to meeting for future OSU-Cascades Innovation District

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a meeting Feb. 4 for business and real estate leaders to discuss plans for an innovation district on the Bend campus.

The session, called a “market sounding,” will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus and also be presented virtually. The session is free, but registration is required.

The concept of a 24-acre innovation district was approved by the city of Bend as part of the campus planning effort in 2018. The first phase of the district will encompass eight acres.
