Virtual OSU Science Pub focuses on runners and their shoes

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Oregon State University’s campuses in Corvallis and Bend have collaborated to host a virtual science pub talk on May 11 about how runners perform in different running footwear.

Christine Pollard, associate professor of kinesiology and director of the FORCE Lab at OSU-Cascades, will discuss her research on heavily cushioned soles, so-called “maximal shoes" in a virtual Science Pub.

High school juniors and seniors engaged in college searches can meet with Oregon State University – Cascades faculty and staff to learn about degree programs, the student experience and career exploration during a series of upcoming virtual events.

The Bend Beavs Live Chat events enable prospective students and their families to learn more about the college search process and OSU-Cascades’ offerings while maintaining social distancing in keeping with OSU’s commitment to reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19.

Transfer Tuesdays provide personal sessions for adults interested in completing degree at OSU-Cascades

Students interested in enrolling at Oregon State University – Cascades are invited to register for a personal online or phone appointment with a transfer admissions specialist.

Transfer admissions specialists will introduce prospective students to degree programs and academic support resources offered at OSU-Cascades; review the transfer application process; complete a transfer credit evaluation; and share financial aid resources. 

Students interested in transferring to OSU-Cascades can sign up for personal online or phone appointments.

OSU-Cascades to launch first degree in engineering science at a public university on the West Coast

Oregon State University – Cascades will offer a new bachelor’s degree in the fall 2020 to address employer needs for engineers that can work across a wide range of engineering disciplines.

The engineering science degree will be the first of its kind from a public university on the U.S. West Coast.

Graduates of the new engineering science program will serve as engineers in a variety of fields, pursue graduate school, or enter professional programs in medicine or law.

Oregon State postpones 2020 commencement ceremonies in Corvallis and Bend

Based on input from Oregon State University students, the university announced today it is postponing commencement ceremonies in Corvallis and at OSU-Cascades in Bend until a later date, possibly in the fall.

This decision is in keeping with the university’s measures to help reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19 and is in compliance with Gov. Kate Brown’s executive orders to address the pandemic, including an extension of social distancing and remote learning orders issued Wednesday by Brown.

Based on student input, the OSU-Cascades commencement ceremonies are postponed until a later date..

Science Pub features screening of “Heceta Bank: Oregon’s Hidden Wonder” and discussion

At Oregon State University - Cascades' upcoming Science Pub, OSU marine scientists will host a screening of “Heceta Bank: Oregon’s Hidden Wonder,” a new, short documentary that depicts how a submerged rocky bank 35 miles off the Oregon coast has surprising and beneficial impacts on our state’s coastal environments.

Science Pub will take place on Tuesday, March 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the theater at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

OSU-Cascades offers Summer Academy for high school students

Oregon State University – Cascades will again host high school students for a Summer Academy that will expose participants to college classes and workshops led by OSU-Cascades faculty. Participants in the six-day sessions will experience living in a college campus residence hall, as well as outdoor recreation on Central Oregon’s lakes, rivers and trails.

Science Pub focuses on how scientists and citizens measure snowpack

Engineering professor and National Geographic Explorer David Hill will join Oregon State University – Cascades' Feb. 18 Science Pub to discuss ways scientists and community members contribute to understanding the fresh water potential in mountain snow packs.

The Science Pub, “What’s in Your Snowpack? Snow, Water and the Power of Citizen Science,” will take place in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

OSU engineering professor David Hill is co-leader of the Community Observations + YOU project, one of six citizen science projects funded by NASA to improve understanding of our physical environment.
