Science Pub explores the science behind the pathways of rivers

As rivers flow in the Pacific Northwest and around the globe, they shape and interact with the environment around them.  At Oregon State University – Cascades’ upcoming Science Pub, OSU courtesy professor and author Sean Fleming will examine what mathematics and physics can reveal about rivers. He will also explore the relationships between rivers and their surrounding landscapes, ecosystems and societies.

Titled “A Random Walk along the River,” this Science Pub will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 19 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

OSU-Cascades to host series of TEDxBend Salons

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a series of TED Salons presented by TEDxBend. TED Salons welcome small audiences for curated TED Talks that revolve around globally relevant themes and provide an opportunity for facilitated discussion following each talk.

The following Salons are organized by TEDxBend and will take place in Tykeson Hall, Rm. 206 on the OSU-Cascades campus at 1500 SW Chandler Ave. in Bend.

Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin to speak at OSU, with livestream to OSU-Cascades as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events

Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, will speak Jan. 21 at Oregon State University as part of the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The presentation will be livestreamed to OSU-Cascades in Bend, at an event open to the public.

In 2012, at the age of 17, Martin died during a violent confrontation in Florida. The publicity surrounding his death and the ensuing trial catapulted the country into a national debate. Since then, Fulton has co-authored a book about her son and become a spokesperson for turning family tragedy into social change.

OSU-Cascades and COCC agreement supports student success, seamlessness between institutions

An agreement between Oregon State University – Cascades and Central Oregon Community College announced this week expands efforts between the university and the college to more effectively guide students to four-year degree completion.

Under the Degree Partnership Program, students interested in starting studies at COCC can self-identify as bachelor’s degree-seeking, and be jointly admitted to both schools, allowing them to access academic advisors from OSU-Cascades.

OSU-Cascades to host public meeting on federal grant proposal

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a public meeting to gather input on a proposal for an Environmental Protection Agency FY19 brownfields cleanup grant.

The grant proposal seeks funding for the planned remediation of university-owned property, a former county demolition landfill.

The public meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 16 in Tykeson Hall, Rm. 111 on the OSU-Cascades campus located at 1500 SW Chandler Ave. in Bend.

Head of FORCE Lab at OSU-Cascades to share latest on running shoes at Science Pub Corvallis

Christine Pollard, who directs the Functional Orthopedic Research Center of Excellence Laboratory – better known as the FORCE Lab – at Oregon State University - Cascades in Bend will present the lab’s unexpected findings on “maximal” or cushioned running shoes at the next Science Pub Corvallis. 

Her presentation on the popular shoes begins at 6 p.m., Jan. 14, 2019 in the Old World Deli, 341 2nd St. in Corvallis. It is free and open to the public.

Science Pub explores the volcanoes of Oregon, including those under close monitoring

Oregon is near the top of the national list when it comes to the number of volcanoes in the state -- there are thousands within its borders. At Oregon State University – Cascades’ upcoming Science Pub, OSU geologist Adam Kent will explore the volcanic life of our state, focusing on four major volcanoes that are on a high priority list for monitoring. 

Titled “What Will Oregon’s Next Volcanic Eruption Look Like?” the Science Pub will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 15 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board to meet

The Oregon State University - Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will meet on Jan. 23.

The meeting will provide updates on strategic initiatives at the campus, including long range development planning, community relations, academic programs and student success. 

The meeting will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Obsidian Hall, Room 210 on the OSU-Cascades campus on Chandler Avenue in Bend.

OSU-Cascades dining and academic building now named Obsidian Hall

Obsidian Hall; Oregon State University - Cascades; OSU-Cascades; Bend, Ore.

Obsidian Hall: that is the new name of the dining and academic building at Oregon State University – Cascades following a campus-wide engagement campaign involving students, faculty, staff and stakeholders.

Signage designating the building name was recently installed on the west and north faces of the building.

Obsidian Hall was completed in 2016, the year the Bend OSU campus opened.
