The Distinguished Student Award is one of the top honors given to students by the Oregon State University – Cascades faculty. The annual award recognizes one graduating student from each degree area for outstanding academic achievement and contributions to their field.

The following graduates of the OSU-Cascades Class of 2018 received the award.

At its 17th Commencement on Sunday, June 17, Oregon State University - Cascades will honor the second largest graduating class in its 17-year history, a class of 368 students. One third of the undergraduates – 91 students – will be the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree. 

Campus officials anticipate that more than 2,500 family and friends of graduates will attend the ceremonies at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend.  Nearly 290 students plan to participate in the ceremonies.

Including the Class of 2018, more than 3,800 students will have graduated from OSU-Cascades since it was established in 2001.

Bend City Council unanimously approves OSU-Cascades campus masterplan

Oregon State University officials Thursday morning applauded a unanimous decision by the Bend City Council to approve the Oregon State University – Cascades campus master plan for development of a 128-acre campus that over the next two decades will serve up to 3,000 to 5,000 students.

The council’s vote Wednesday night follows a required review by the city that was initiated in January and rezones the campus property as mixed used.

OSU biologist advocates ecological approach to improving human health

Chronic diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorders and obesity may ultimately vanquish the efforts of medical intervention unless people change their diet, an Oregon State University biologist argues in a paper published this week.

Matt Orr, assistant professor in the College of Science at OSU-Cascades, describes a “restoration ecology” approach toward patient health – every person is like an ecosystem, he says, and effectively fighting chronic disease requires fostering the communities of symbiotic gut microbes that people need for their health.

Screenings of Oregon State University documentary set for Corvallis, Bend

Premiere screenings of a one-hour OPB “Oregon Experience” documentary that explores the 150-year history of Oregon State University are scheduled in early June in Bend and Corvallis.

The Bend screening of the documentary, called “Oregon State University,” will be held at 7 p.m. June 5 at the Tower Theatre. The event is free but tickets are required. Reserve them online: http://bit.ly/2KqWytZ.

OSU-Cascades to honor Jane Evey Teater with special recognition at commencement

Oregon State University – Cascades will honor former educator and community volunteer Jane Evey Teater during its 17th annual commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 17.

Teater will receive the Distinguished Service Award. The award honors individuals, businesses or organizations who have made exceptional contributions to OSU-Cascades, Central Oregon, the State of Oregon or the world.

Central Oregon tech leader Preston Callicott to deliver commencement address

Preston Callicott, chief executive officer of Bend-based Five Talent Software and active  community volunteer, will provide the keynote address at the Oregon State University - Cascades commencement ceremonies on Sunday, June 17.

“Preston is a tireless champion for innovation in our community,” said OSU-Cascades Vice President Becky Johnson.  “I know his personal experience, as well as the passion he demonstrates for his field and his community, will inspire our graduates.”

OSU president calls for continued funding for OSU-Cascades

Oregon State University President Edward J. Ray today said that university leaders will work to secure state bonding to help support continued expansion of the OSU-Cascades campus and the construction of a student success center during the 2019 legislative session.

Ray gave his annual OSU-Cascades State of the University address today to more than 400 people at the Riverhouse Convention Center.
