Originally from Turner’s Falls, Massachusetts, Shane earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History in 1994 from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Shane spent the next 20 years as a Navy SEAL Officer, retiring at the rank of Commander. During his naval career, Shane served at SEAL Teams ONE, TWO, FIVE, and EIGHT. In 2010, he received his Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College located in Newport, RI. During his time in the military, Shane has deployed to Latin America, Europe, East Africa, the Middle East and the Western Pacific regions. He is also a combat veteran of the wars in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. Shane completed his naval service in 2014 as the Commanding Officer of Special Boat Team TWELVE in Coronado, Ca.
Moving to Bend, he served as a Bend Police Officer in 2015. In 2016, Shane was employed as a Protective Security Specialist contractor and provided Diplomatic Security for U.S. State Department personnel and property at our Consulate in Northern Iraq/Kurdistan. He has lived in Bend since 2014 and is married to OSU-Cascades assistant dean and program lead for kinesiology, Kara Witzke. Kara and Shane have two children, Kaite (18) and Connery (14). In his time off, Shane enjoys the shooting sports, hiking, mountain biking and scuba diving.
