Biography

Marilyn Winkleby, MPH, Ph.D., is a Professor of Medicine, emerita at Stanford University, Department of Medicine. After completing her doctorate at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health she led a population health science research group at Stanford that combined epidemiologic study with intervention research to further the understanding of social determinants of health. She received substantial funding from NIH and CDC, and has published over 150 articles in scientific journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine. She is known for her community partnerships, including her 15-year collaboration with the Monterey County Health Department and 20-year collaboration with Lund University in Sweden. The breadth of her scientific work has had an international impact on improving the health of medically underserved populations. Her research is congruent with a number of public service activities, including the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program, an organization that she co-founded in 1988 that has helped prepare over 750 high school students historically underrepresented in higher education for science and health careers. In 2011, this program received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government for mentoring in these fields.
