Oregon State University – Cascades will host award-winning comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick for a lecture on Monday, May 12.

“An Evening with Kelly Sue DeConnick” will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

DeConnick is best known for her work on Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” and DC Comics’ “Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons,” which won an Eisner Award. In her presentation, she will reflect on her career in comics and share insights into storytelling, the creative process and the transformative power of finding one’s voice. The discussion will also explore how comics can serve as a platform for activism and artistic expression.

DeConnick’s career spans mainstream and independent comics, film, television and stage. Her original comic series “Bitch Planet” and “Pretty Deadly” are New York Times bestsellers, and her recent comic book “FML” by Dark Horse Comics has been praised for its satirical take on high school and the feminist punk movement of the 1990s.

In addition to her comics work, DeConnick contributed to the billion-dollar-grossing “Captain Marvel” film and consulted on “The Marvels” with Marvel Studios. Her stage writing debut, “Awakening,” premiered at the Wynn Las Vegas in 2022.

A sought-after speaker and advocate for representation in media, DeConnick founded the #VisibleWomen Project to connect marginalized genders with opportunities in comics and adjacent industries. She is also a founding partner of Good Trouble Productions, producing educational comics and collaborating on projects like the late Congressman John Lewis’ “Run” series, a graphic memoir.
