Award-winning author Kristen Millares Young to speak at OSU-Cascades

The Oregon State University – Cascades will host award-winning author, journalist and essayist Kristen Millares Young on Sept. 25.
 
Millares Young is the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program’s fall 2024 visiting writer.
 
She will present and read from her work at a public event at 6:30 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus.
 
The event is free, but registration is required. A book signing will follow, with book sales hosted by Roundabout Books.
 
Millares Young is the author of the novel “Subduction,” a contemporary story set in the Pacific Northwest with echoes of the first encounters between Native Americans and settlers. The novel has received acclaim and was named a staff pick by The Paris Review, referred to as “whip-smart” by The Washington Post and a “brilliant debut” by The Seattle Times. It won Nautilus and IPPY awards, and was a finalist for two International Latino Book Awards.
 
Millares Young’s essays, reviews, stories and investigations have appeared in publications including The Washington Post, Literary Hub, the Guardian, The Rumpus, PANK Magazine, Los Angeles Review and Fiction International, as well as in anthologies including “Latina Outsiders: Remaking Latina Identity” and “Advanced Creative Nonfiction: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology.”
 
Millares Young was the researcher for the New York Times team that produced “Snow Fall,” a multimedia presentation of the story of the 2012 Tunnel Creek avalanche in Wash., which won a Pulitzer Prize and is credited with changing how journalists approach online storytelling.
 
Her stories have been recognized by the Society for Features Journalism, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. She has been a fellow at UC Berkeley’s Knight Digital Media Center, the Jack Straw Writing Program and the University of Washington Graduate School.
 
Millares Young graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and earned an MFA from the University of Washington.
 
Visiting writers in the MFA in Creative Writing program at OSU-Cascades lead graduate students in workshops and give readings that are open to the community. Past visiting writers have included award-winning authors such as novelist Raquel Gutiérrez, novelist and short story writer Justin Taylor, and poets Rebecca Morgan Frank and André Naffis-Sahely.
