OSU-Cascades celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Day of Service, presentation by Franchesca Ramsey

Oregon State University – Cascades will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16 with a Day of Service and a public presentation by actress, comedian, writer and activist Franchesca Ramsey. The presentation will be live streamed.

The Day of Service will contribute student volunteer efforts to nonprofit organizations throughout Bend and Redmond.  It kicks off at 9 a.m. with a student breakfast at the Beaver Dam in the campus dining/academic building, before students travel to the nonprofits. Faculty and staff are also invited to volunteer with the organizations.

Organizers anticipate up to 50 student volunteers will contribute to projects as varied as shelf stocking at The Giving Plate, painting at Healing Reins, and bagging dental supplies at Kemple Children’s Dental Clinic. Students will also provide volunteer efforts to BrightSide Animal Center Thrift Store, Grandma’s House, Humane Society of Central Oregon, Ronald McDonald House and Westside Village School.

The public presentation with Franchesca Ramsey will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Ramsey is a leading voice at the confluence of pop culture and social justice education. She hosts the MTV News Decoded series, where her work uses comedy to explore race, ethnicity, gender and culture.

The presentation will be open to the public and will be live streamed from an event at OSU’s Corvallis campus celebrating Dr. King.  No registration is necessary. It will be held in Tykeson Hall, Rm. 206 on the OSU-Cascades campus located at 1500 SW Chandler Ave., Bend.
