Worldwide, reefs are being lost at an alarming rate. Oregon State University – Cacades’ upcoming Science Pub features a special screening of “Saving Atlantis”, a documentary that explores coral reefs around the globe and was produced by a team of award-winning filmmakers and marine science researchers from OSU.  The screening will be followed by a conversation with members of the team.

Saving Atlantis, A Special Screening” will take place at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend on Tuesday, April 17.

“Saving Atlantis” explores some of our planet's greatest natural wonders at a tipping point in their ecological history. It describes the dramatic decline of global coral reef ecosystems and the impact on the human populations that depend on them. Produced by OSU media experts, the film shows the work of researchers in OSU's Rebecca Vega Thurber Laboratory, marine scientists who are fighting to uncover the causes of coral decline and find solutions before it is too late.

Following the film, audience members are invited to join a discussion with Ryan McMinds, a doctoral candidate pursuing research in the Vega Thurber Lab and featured in the documentary, and David Baker, an OSU media producer and the co-director and producer of the film.

OSU-Cascades Science Pubs engage community members in the work underway by Oregon State researchers and scholars from around the state. Since 2009, OSU-Cascades has hosted Science Pubs on topics ranging from fermentation science to forest fires to autism.
