Finding Inspiration in Italy: Blair’s Study Abroad Experience
A Q&A with Business Major Blair Voorhees
I’m a senior at OSU-Cascades majoring in business with a minor in outdoor products.
I found the program through API Study Abroad about two years ago while I was looking for a meaningful way to spend the time between undergrad and my master’s. I wanted to immerse myself in the global center of design and build on my education in product development. The application process and securing a visa took some time, but the experience has been absolutely worth it.
I wasn’t really nervous about much other than making sure my skis made it here.
A typical day starts with a double espresso and a croissant. Then I ride the Milan metro to classes, which usually run until about 4 p.m. In the evenings, I often meet friends for aperitivo before heading to a vinyl bar or rooftop. Weekends are filled with day trips around northern Italy or Switzerland, or multi-day visits to the Alps to chase snow.
Studying in Italy connects to what I’m pursuing at OSU-Cascades because I switched my major from outdoor products to business. The program’s curriculum and studio resources were still developing, so I wanted a more immersive design experience to refine my eye and deepen my understanding of design principles.
Being in Italy has allowed me to engage directly with environments shaped by centuries of craftsmanship and thoughtful design. It complements my business studies by giving me a more well-rounded perspective on product, management and marketing.
I’d tell them that studying abroad is worth the effort, even if it feels intimidating at first. It’s a chance to step outside your usual environment, see how culture, politics and problem-solving happen in a completely different context, and refine your skills in ways you can’t get in a classroom at home. The application and logistics can take time, but the perspective and experience you gain are invaluable, both personally and professionally.
