Finding Inspiration in Italy: Blair’s Study Abroad Experience

A Q&A with Business Major Blair Voorhees

What year are you at OSU-Cascades and what is your major?

I’m a senior at OSU-Cascades majoring in business with a minor in outdoor products.

What made you decide to study abroad in Italy, and how did you find the opportunity through OSU-Cascades? Was it an easy process to find the program and apply?

I found the program through API Study Abroad about two years ago while I was looking for a meaningful way to spend the time between undergrad and my master’s. I wanted to immerse myself in the global center of design and build on my education in product development. The application process and securing a visa took some time, but the experience has been absolutely worth it.

Before you left, what were you most nervous about, and what ended up being easier than you expected?

I wasn’t really nervous about much other than making sure my skis made it here.

What does a typical day look like for you while studying abroad?

A typical day starts with a double espresso and a croissant. Then I ride the Milan metro to classes, which usually run until about 4 p.m. In the evenings, I often meet friends for aperitivo before heading to a vinyl bar or rooftop. Weekends are filled with day trips around northern Italy or Switzerland, or multi-day visits to the Alps to chase snow.

How does studying in Italy connect to what you’re studying at OSU-Cascades?

Studying in Italy connects to what I’m pursuing at OSU-Cascades because I switched my major from outdoor products to business. The program’s curriculum and studio resources were still developing, so I wanted a more immersive design experience to refine my eye and deepen my understanding of design principles.

Being in Italy has allowed me to engage directly with environments shaped by centuries of craftsmanship and thoughtful design. It complements my business studies by giving me a more well-rounded perspective on product, management and marketing.

What would you say to an OSU-Cascades student who is thinking about studying abroad but isn’t sure if they should do it?

I’d tell them that studying abroad is worth the effort, even if it feels intimidating at first. It’s a chance to step outside your usual environment, see how culture, politics and problem-solving happen in a completely different context, and refine your skills in ways you can’t get in a classroom at home. The application and logistics can take time, but the perspective and experience you gain are invaluable, both personally and professionally.
