Professional Teaching Program

The Teaching major requires students to apply to the Professional Teaching Program to progress Fall Term third year (Year 3) courses. The Professional Teaching Program is the Year 3 and Year 4. Students progress from Pre-Teaching status to full Teaching Major with Elementary Education Specialty Option. Students moving into Student Teaching year (Year 4) will also need to meet the Student Teaching advancement requirements.

2021-2022 Professional Program:

Applications open on January 1, 2021. Applications close on June 1, 2021 with admissions decisions shared each month until June 15th 2021. Students may be conditionally admitted (dependent on final grades), if there are pre-requisites that are in progress at time of application. Connect with advisor if applying after June 15th.

Professional Application Requirements:

Professional Teaching Program Requirements (YEAR 3)

Students must complete courses in the Pre-Teaching major and meet entrance requirements before applying to the Teaching major. The Pre-Teaching major consists of 90 credits of baccalaureate core and pre-teaching courses. Students meet with an advisor at least once per year prior to applying to the professional level.

  • 3.0 preferred overall GPA
  • Complete Pre-Teaching courses with C grade or better

Student Teaching Requirements (YEAR 4)

         Advancement to Teacher Candidacy and Student Teaching (Fall Term, Year 4) is based on:

  • Completion of Teaching major and option requirements courses outside the Year 4 Student Teaching
  • All Professional Program classes must have a GPA of 3.0
  • All program courses must be C grade or higher
  • Complete ED 409 series in practicum
  • Earn a passing score on the National Evaluation Series (NES) Elementary Education I and II subtests. For 2021-2022 student teaching year - exceptions for testing access may be made by Teaching Coordinator.
