OSU-Cascades offers coursework toward an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement, open to our MAT candidates and Oregon licensed teachers. Here is a video with more information about OSU-Cascades' incredible ESOL endorsement! ESOL is a highly valuable endorsement both for the job search and your preparation to teach any learner.
ED 219 Civil Rights and Multicultural Issues in Education (3), which is offered at Central Oregon Community College and online through Ecampus, may be substituted for ED 522 with program approval.
To earn the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement, Oregon’s Teachers Standards and Practices Commission requires candidates to understand and use standards-based practices to construct learning environments that support ESOL and bilingual students’ cultural identities, language and literacy development, and content area achievement. Although most endorsement candidates will be working with English learners (ELs) as classroom teachers, with this endorsement you may be hired as an English language development (ELD) specialist, and you will be expected to be able to teach to the English language proficiency (ELP) standards. A strong internship experience is perhaps the most critical step in your preparation.
Please read the following:
General ESOL Internship Expectations
The internship requires successful completion of the following:
ESOL Observation 1: CT observing one lesson together (counts for ESOL US 1 & ESOL CT 1)
ESOL Observation 2: US observing one unique lesson (counts for ESOL US 2)
ESOL Observation 3: CT observing one unique lesson (counts for ESOL CT 2)
Candidates will use Taskstream for submitting and tracking all field placement documentation. The internship instructor will give candidates the necessary self-enrollment code for Taskstream for our ESOL directed response folio (DRF).
OSU-Cascades MAT candidates who plan to pursue the ESOL endorsement, please contact Gillian Harper for more information.
