Naked Barley – Unveiling the Most Ancient Grain
Barley, arguably the world’s oldest crop, is the base of beer and is also approved as heart-healthy by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. In the upcoming Science Pub, Patrick Hayes, a professor in OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and head of OSU’s barley breeding program, will explore the origins of barley and trace its journey from grain to glass through malting. He will bring the talk closer to home with a look at Full Pint, a barley variety grown at Mecca Grade Estate Malt in Madras.

Wolves in Oregon: Facts, Research, Issues
John Williams, Associate Professor, Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences, OSU College of Agricultural Sciences
In 1995 and 1996, 31 wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park and 35 in central Idaho. These populations have grown to more than 1,500, with more than 835 in Idaho. As wolf populations have grown, so has predation on livestock, complicating cow and ranch management. Join OSU's John Williams to learn about a study that launched in 2008 and over the next six years collected data on both cattle and wolves. You'll follow both animals' patterns across eight ranches and hear the many lessons learned about wolves in Oregon.

Denying the Deniers: The Science of Ocean Acidification
The ocean is absorbing a significant proportion of human derived carbon dioxide, which is changing the chemistry of the world's oceans. The Oregon coast has become a rallying point for industry, government and academia to take action on this problem due to the impacts on the regional shellfish industry. George Waldbusser, an OSU researcher focusing on marine ecology, will discuss the current state of knowledge on ocean acidification and its impacts on marine life, with a focus on the Oregon coast and its crucial oyster industry. This Science Pub will be interactive with demonstrations using live oysters, real-time carbon dioxide sensors and a live chemistry lesson.

A Preview of the 2016 GRAMMYs
This special Science Pub is music to your ears, literally. Bob Santelli is the former director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, and prior to that was with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and with the Experience Music Project. He is now OSU’s Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts. In this special presentation, Santelli will present a preview of the 2016 GRAMMYs -- they're coming up on Feb. 12 -- as the awards enter their 60th year. He will also share an overview of the greatest GRAMMY performances in the music award program's history. Some seats are reserved at this event for members of the local arts community.

Unmanned Aircrafts and Remote Sensing
Explore how unmanned aircraft systems are used to advance science research at Oregon State University. Michael Wing is a forest engineer with the College of Forestry and director of the OSU Aerial Information Systems Laboratory. Wing will explain how UAS collect detailed imagery and allow researchers to analyze it within hours of a flight, aiding disciplines including wildlife, forestry, agriculture and other fields.

Labor Shortage in the Hospitality Industry is at a Tipping Point
A research project started within OSU-Cascades’ hospitality management program has surprising implications for the hospitality industry nationwide. Program lead and Executive-in-Residence Todd Montgomery will share findings from a national study of hotel, resort and other hospitality industry employees -- including employees in Central Oregon businesses – conducted by the hospitality program’s new research arm. Come discover how this labor shortage will impact the economy, future workforce and customer service in Oregon and across the nation.

There Goes the Sun: The North American Total Solar Eclipse of 2017
The Sun is the most powerful object in our sky. The Sun’s corona is invisible except during a total solar eclipse when it is revealed for only a few minutes. On August 21, North America will experience a total solar eclipse when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully blocks the Sun. This is the first total solar eclipse to target the continental U.S. since 1979, the first to run from the North American Pacific Coast to Atlantic Coast since 1918, and the first total since 1776 with its path of totality completely within the continental U.S. Discover how this once-in-a lifetime natural event will soon play out across Oregon, and the rest of the country.
