Now that you've explored internship options, it's time to connect with employers and start applying.
Connect with employers & apply for internships
If you find internship positions online that match your interests and degree requirements, go ahead and apply directly to those opportunities. Otherwise, start reaching out to employers and companies directly.
- Send a professional inquiry email to several companies that you would like to intern with. Introduce yourself as a student and explain the internship requirements.
- Share your resume and cover letter, and set up an interview.
- Be sure to bring internship learning objectives or goals to discuss with the internship site during your interview.
- Decide which internship site best meets your internship learning objectives and career goals.
Once you’ve found one, talk with your Internship Supervisor to define the following expectations:
- Where and when will the internship take place (including hours per week and total weeks)?
-
What are your Learning Objectives or goals for the internship?
-
Will the internship be paid or volunteer?
-
What are the shared expectations about check-ins, communication, and assessment?
Review your Degree Requirements
- Talk with your Academic Advisor about using an internship to fulfill your Experiential Learning Requirement (3 credits).
-
You can use an internship to meet the 60 upper-division credit requirement and the 180 total credit requirement.
Decide amount of credits or non-credit
-
You can register for 0 (non-credit) to 16 credits of internship in a given term.
-
1 credit equals 30 hours of work in total.
-
You can earn internship credits in one single term or in multiple consecutive terms.
-
Consider registering for internship as non-credit (OEAS 004) at no cost! This will make your internship experience transcript visible. This is also a great option if you choose to do your internship over multiple terms, but you do not need the subsequent credits to fulfill remaining degree requirements.
-
You can earn internship credit regardless of whether the experience is paid or volunteer.
Consider impact on Financial Aid and Scholarships
-
Does your financial aid or scholarship eligibility require minimum credit registration that Research credits could help meet?
Once you’ve defined the expectations with your Internship Supervisor and reviewed the above time and cost factors with your Academic Advisor, you are ready to apply!
