OSU-Cascades to host Indigenous author Beth Piatote for conversation on stories and language on May 19

Oregon State University – Cascades will host Nimi:pu, also known as Nez Perce author Beth Piatote for an evening of storytelling and discussion on May 19. 

The event, titled “Indigenous Futures, Ancient Echoes: A Conversation in Story and Language,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Catered hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Beth Piatote wil speak at an event on May 19. She is an associate professor of English and comparative literature at University of California Berkeley.

Acclaimed comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick to speak at OSU-Cascades on May 12

Oregon State University – Cascades will host award-winning comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick for a lecture on Monday, May 12.

“An Evening with Kelly Sue DeConnick” will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

OSU-Cascades hosts OSU metabolic health researcher for Science Pub talk May 13

Metabolic health and healthy aging will be the topic of Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub on May 13.

Presenter Sean Newsom is an associate professor and integrative metabolic physiologist in OSU’s College of Health. He is also co-director of the Translational Metabolism Research Laboratory, where researchers investigate the molecular and cellular basis of metabolic disease and lifestyle interventions.

OSU-Cascades to honor Mark Kralj posthumously with special recognition at commencement

Oregon State University – Cascades will posthumously honor Mark Kralj, a former member of the OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board, during its 24th annual commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 15.

Emily Kralj, Kralj’s daughter, will accept the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of the Kralj family. Mark died on Oct. 1, 2024. The annual award honors individuals, businesses or organizations who have made exceptional contributions to OSU-Cascades, Central Oregon, Oregon or the world.

Mark Kralj, who was a member of OSU-Cascades' Advocacy and Advisory Board, will be honored posthumously at OSU-Cascades' Commencement Ceremony on June 15.

OSU-Cascades to host open house focused on net zero energy campus

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a public open house to share its progress and plans toward a net zero energy campus. 

The event will take place from 4-6 p.m., May 15 in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall. 

During the open house, participants will view displays that explain the engineering behind the net zero energy goal, meet with campus planners and energy experts, and have an opportunity to provide feedback.

OSU-Cascades awarded $2 million to monitor national park ecological data

Researchers at Oregon State University – Cascades received a $2 million grant from the National Park Service to monitor and analyze data gathered by the agency, assess the ecological health and resilience of parks and better understand management practices that can help parks adapt to ecological threats and conditions.

With the grant, scientists at OSU-Cascades will harness data collected by hundreds of NPS scientists across thousands of projects at more than 280 national parks.

The OSU-Cascades HERS Lab will use a $2 million grant from the National Park Service to harness key data collected across 280 national parks.
