A company started by an Oregon State University – Cascades researcher is a semifinalist in a $4 million federal competition to develop green, economically viable methods for extracting from geothermal brine a chemical element important for electric vehicles.

Bahman Abbasi is an assistant professor at OSU-Cascades and founder of Espiku, a company spun off from research underway in the Water and Energy Technologies Lab.

OSU-Cascades is Oregon’s first public university to launch doctor of physical therapy degree

Oregon State University – Cascades launched the first doctor of physical therapy degree program at a state public university this fall, welcoming an initial cohort of 45 students.

The doctor of physical therapy, or DPT, program is anticipated to produce clinicians to address the need for physical therapists in Oregon and across the nation, especially in rural areas, according to Christine Pollard, a professor and founding director of the DPT program.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program at OSU-Cascades is the first DPT program to be offered at an Oregon public university.

OSU-Cascades student veterans have place to connect, find academic support and resources

Oregon State University – Cascades opened a Veterans Lounge this fall to provide a place for students who served in the military to connect and find academic and community resources.

The lounge is staffed by student veterans who serve as peer advisors. It offers computers, printers and a seating area for studying and gathering. The student staff are available to support students who drop by or make appointments.

The Veterans Lounge, located in Obsidian Hall was funded through a grant from the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs.

OSU-Cascades fall enrollment shows an increase in degree-seeking students, students taking more classes

The number of students pursuing degrees in fall term at Oregon State University – Cascades increased 2% over the previous year, and students are taking significantly more courses.

“There is a vibrant energy and optimism on campus,” said OSU-Cascades Interim Vice President Andrew Ketsdever. “Our small campus atmosphere, faculty-student mentoring and innovative research continue to give students and families confidence in the quality of education offered at OSU-Cascades.”

There are 1,247 undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees at OSU-Cascades this fall.

Oregon State University Extension’s Christmas tree specialist will talk about what it takes to grow a quality Christmas tree at OSU’s Science Pub on Nov. 8.

The virtual event, a joint effort of Oregon State University in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend, will feature a talk by Chal Landgren, a professor in OSU’s College of Forestry at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora. His presentation is titled "Your Christmas Tree: What does a grower do in the 7-12 years before you cut a tree?”

The Oregon State University Science Pub on Oct. 11 will focus on how science fiction like Star Trek movies and television programs may strengthen hope for building a better future when the world seems overcome with crises.

The virtual event, a joint effort of Oregon State University in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend, will feature a talk by Jose-Antonio Orosco, a professor of philosophy at Oregon State. His presentation is titled: “To Boldy Go: Why Scientists and Social Justice Warriors Need Star Trek.”

OSU-Cascades to host drive-thru and walk-up clinics for flu shots, COVID-19 vaccinations

Oregon State University – Cascades will host free flu shot and COVID-19 vaccination clinics for faculty, staff, students and Central Oregon community members Oct. 12 and 13.

The on-campus clinics are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The drive-thru clinic will take place in the newly opened OSU-Cascades parking lot off Simpson Avenue  between Mt. Washington Road and Century Avenue.

Drive-thru and walk-up flu shot and COVID-19 vaccination clinics on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 are open to students, employees and community members.

OSU-Cascades to host virtual talks by national civil rights activist, thought leader on race and culture

A civil rights activist and a leader on race, religion and contemporary culture will be featured at virtual presentations hosted by the Oregon State University - Cascades Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Laboratory this fall.

Tamika D. Mallory, who gave what has been called “the speech of a generation” in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, will join a conversation with Erika McCalpine, executive director for strategic diversity at OSU-Cascades from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 6. Her talk is titled “An Evening with Tamika D. Mallory: Real Activism.”

Annual research funding at OSU-Cascades is second highest in history, contributing solutions to local and global challenges

Research funding at Oregon State University – Cascades reached $3.4 million during the past fiscal year, the second highest total in campus history.

That figure continues an upward trajectory in research funding at the growing campus, where research dollars totaled $9.3 million over the past three fiscal years, more than double the level from the preceding three fiscal years.

Bahman Abbasi leads the Water and Energy Technologies Lab at OSU-Cascades, and the campus's largest current research effort.
