Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration features livestream of talk by Out Magazine editor Raquel Willis, volunteer opportunities

Raquel Willis, the executive editor of Out Magazine and a black queer transgender activist and writer, will speak Monday at Oregon State University in Corvallis. The presentation will be livestreamed to OSU-Cascades as part of the Bend campus’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The free event is open to the public and will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Tykeson Hall, Room 111. Following the livestream, Erin Rook, diversity coordinator at OSU-Cascades, will host a discussion on the keynote’s themes.

A free livestream presentation will feature Raquel Willis, the executive editor of Out Magazine, and a black queer transgender activist and writer.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board to meet

The Oregon State University - Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 29 in Tykeson Hall, Room 111 on the OSU-Cascades campus on Chandler Avenue in Bend.

This meeting will cover topics including the future student success center and terms for advisory board members. Amy Watson, assistant professor of marketing, will present on research looking at how marketers navigate controversial social issues.

Science Pub sheds light on bats and bat conservation efforts in the Pacific Northwest

At Oregon State University – Cascades’ upcoming Science Pub, bat ecologist Tom Rodhouse will explore the little known, yet extensive world of bats, including the role they play in natural ecosystems, why some populations are threatened and how citizen scientists can help them.

The Science Pub, “Out of the Night, Into the Light: The Secret World of Bats,” will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 21 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

Tom Rodhouse is co-director of the HERS Lab at OSU-Cascades and a bat expert.

NSF awards $750,000 to OSU-Cascades anthropologist to address relocation of climate refugees

An Oregon State University – Cascades anthropologist has been awarded $750,000 by the National Science Foundation to research issues facing coastal communities exposed to repetitive flooding, and the effectiveness of federal disaster response policies.

Elizabeth Marino, an assistant professor in the OSU College of Liberal Arts, will lead a research team that will consider community needs and responses related to the impacts of severe storms and repeated flooding.

OSU-Cascades honors student veterans

Oregon State University – Cascades students who are veterans are being recognized during a slate of activities hosted through Nov. 11.

Seven percent of OSU-Cascades students are veterans, including 77 former active duty veterans and 17 students receiving veteran dependent benefits.

OSU-Cascades fall enrollment marks 28% increase in first-year students

Fall term enrollment at Oregon State University – Cascades has increased 4.1% and includes 28% more first-year students than a year ago.

The cohort of 145 incoming first-year students dropped the average age of OSU-Cascades students from 25 to 24.

In total, 1,311 students are enrolled at the Bend campus.

OSU-Cascade welcomed 145 first-year students in fall 2019.

Science Pub explores how OSU-Cascades Energy Systems Lab shapes future of transportation

At Oregon State University – Cascades’ upcoming Science Pub, researcher Chris Hagen will discuss how work underway in the university’s Energy Systems Lab may shape the future of how people and goods are transported in the future.

The Science Pub, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Future Transportation,” will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 19 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.

Chris Hagen teaches in the energy systems engineering program and is director of the Energy Systems Lab at OSU-Cascades.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board to meet

The Oregon State University - Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will meet on October 17.

The meeting will focus on OSU’s Strategic Plan 4.0 which provides a roadmap for how the university will continue to advance research, innovation, engagement and higher education through 2023. Discussion will explore and highlight how OSU-Cascades can contribute to the plan as it continues to expand its campus. 

Rod Ray to deliver evening workshops focused on leadership development

Rod Ray, a Central Oregon community leader and former president and chief executive of Bend Research, will conduct a four-session leadership course this fall at Oregon State University – Cascades for managers and team leaders working in the business or nonprofit sectors.

“Fundamentals of Leadership” starts on Oct. 16 and will be offered from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Wednesdays through Nov. 6 in Obsidian Hall, Room 204 on the OSU-Cascades campus.  Registration is $79 plus a $35 application fee.

Rod Ray served at the helm of Bend Research for more than 20 years, until its purchase by Capsugel in 2014.

At Oregon State University – Cascades’ upcoming Science Pub, researcher Bahman Abbasi will discuss efforts underway at the Bend campus that may help communities around the world in need of clean water.

The Science Pub, “Modular and Portable: A New Way to Help Water Stressed Communities,” will take place on Tuesday, October 15 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis in Bend.
