The connection between the clothing people wear and how others perceive them will be the topic of the Oregon State University Science Pub on Jan. 11.

The virtual event, a joint effort of Oregon State University in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend, will feature a talk by Regan A. R. Gurung, a professor of psychological science in Oregon State’s College of Liberal Arts and interim executive director of OSU’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

OSU-Cascades to host conversation about local communities of color and path to social equity

Oregon State University – Cascades will host a virtual forum titled “Bringing Healing to Communities of Color Post-Election” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 7. The event is free to attend and open to the public.

The forum will be moderated by Erika McCalpine, director of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Laboratory and a business faculty member at OSU-Cascades. Speakers and panelists also include:

How communities in the western United States can adapt to wildfire hazards at a time when the climate is growing hotter and drier will be the topic of the Nov. 9 Oregon State University Science Pub.

Reading event to feature award-winning faculty author and MFA alumni

Beth Alvarado, a faculty author at Oregon State University – Cascades and recent Oregon Book Award winner, will read from her work during a free virtual event Thursday.

Alvarado will read from her forthcoming book “Jillian in the Borderlands.” She will be joined by four graduates of the university’s Low Residency Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, all of whom have recently published and received recognition for their work.

The event, titled “Tell it Slant,” will take place at 6 p.m. via YouTube and Facebook Live.

Faculty author Beth Alvarado will be joined by MFA alumni writers at the Tell it Slant reading event.

OSU-Cascades newest building named Edward J. Ray Hall, honoring OSU past president

The second academic building on the Oregon State University – Cascades campus will be named Edward J. Ray Hall, honoring Oregon State’s most recent past president. The building is under construction and scheduled to open to students in fall 2021.

Ray championed student access to higher education and the creation of a university campus in Central Oregon for more than a decade. His leadership led to the expansion of OSU-Cascades to a four-year university in 2015 and the opening of its campus in Bend in the fall of 2016.

OSU-Cascades second academic building is named in honor of Ed Ray, Oregon State’s most recent past president.

Winter term instruction at OSU-Cascades to prioritize health, continue use of mixed formats

Oregon State University – Cascades will continue to provide instruction through a mix of in-person, remote and blended delivery during winter term.

“We have worked closely with OSU colleagues on our Corvallis campus, local and state health authorities, as well as our OSU-Cascades faculty to determine a mix of teaching modalities that prioritize student success and seek to minimize the possible spread of COVID-19,” said OSU-Cascades Vice President Becky Johnson. 

Nearly half of courses are planned for an in-person or blended format in winter term, with the balance delivered remotely.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board to meet Oct. 6

The Oregon State University - Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will meet Oct. 6 and hear reports on the campus response to the pandemic as the new academic year starts.

Agenda topics also include enrollment and recruiting efforts, undergraduate student success, community event opportunities, and year-to-date fundraising and priority funding areas. Board members also will hear a presentation on potential impacts of the pandemic on state funding for OSU-Cascades.

OSU-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board announces new board members

Oregon State University – Cascades Vice President Becky Johnson has appointed two alumni to serve on the campus’s Advocacy and Advisory Board.

Verenice Alvarez-Sanchez and Chris Vlessis began their terms in 2020 and will serve through September 2023. They replace John Rexford and Oran Teater, who have served on the board since 2008. Teater served as chair of the board and Rexford served as vice chair.
