Renting Process - Living Off Campus

Finding Housing

Finding off-campus housing in Bend can be a challenging process. This page is intended to provide you with some resources to help in your search.

Timeline

Many students initiate their search for Fall Housing as soon as February/March (6-7 months in advance of moving in). Be aware that many off-campus housing options can become harder to find the closer you are to summer due to the tight housing market in Bend. Keep in mind that many housing providers require an application fee that can range from $20 - $75.

Considerations

  • Roommates
    • How many roommates will you have and how will you set expectations?
  • Budget
    • What is your budget for rent and utilities? Do you need a co-signer on the lease? Which utilities are included and which will be an additional cost?
  • Location
    • How close will you be to campus? What transportation will be available to you?
  • Lease Terms
    • Does a 12-month lease work for you? Do you have special circumstances that require accommodations?

Where to Look

Skills & Other Resources

Budgeting

  • Develop a detailed budget.
  • If you are living with roommates, make sure they are legally on the lease with you and that utilities aren't just in your name.
  • Research typical utility costs for the rental property you are interested in.
  • Be prepared for initial move-in costs (first and last month's rent, security deposit, application fee, etc.)
  • For additional assistance with budgeting, contact OSU-Cascades Financial Aid Services.

Living Responsibly

  • Know the tenant responsibilities for the property you are interested in.
  • Abide by Oregon State University's Code of Student Conduct.
    • This code applies to all students whether living on or off campus. Students are expected to be upstanding members of the Bend and university communities. Breaking the law or violating a city ordinance is also a violation of the Student Conduct Code. Sanctions may include alcohol and drug education, community service and reflection papers. For more serious violations, a student may be suspended or expelled from the university. Look at it this way — as an OSU-Cascades student, you represent the university — whether you’re socializing on campus, eating at a restaurant in Bend or visiting friends in Portland. Represent us well.
