All of OSU's Residence Halls are connected to the Internet via an OSU Network. Students living on campus may take advantage of this network connection in their room, common areas and dining halls.
What to bring to connect
All residence hall rooms have a wired network connection and OSU wireless connectivity. We recommend bringing a network cable to connect to the wired network, even if you plan on using wireless. Wired connections are faster, more secure, and more reliable than wireless. OSU does not allow the use of personal wireless routers or access points as they can interfere with OSU's wireless coverage.
Most residents bring a laptop computer, but desktop computers, smart phones, tablets, iPads, etc. can all be used on the network.
Wireless in the Halls
There is a wireless access point (WAP) in every 3rd room or suite (at minimum), this provides good wireless coverage to all residence hall rooms. The WAPs are dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz radio frequencies), and are 802.11a/g/n standards. Campus is also using to 802.11ac in many academic buildings. All are backwards compatible to 802.11a/g/n.
We suggest that any new wireless clients are 802.11ac. 5GHz wireless devices are also highly recommended as there is less interference with 5GHz and most devices that have 5GHz radios also have 2.4GHz radios. 2.4GHz tends to have better range due to lower frequency, but is much more prone to interference.
